I feel like class Monday really opened my eyes to autistic children and today I felt like I was seeing it everywhere...which started a discussion with my older sister and I about whether there was more autistic children or more diagnosed children in schools now then when we were there...because she teaches special ed. now at a elementary school.
I also saw a great lifetime movie today about a single mother who was raising twin autistic boys...it was just really really good...
AND then on my blackberry's mini feed the main news story was about a chinese I think? lady who discovered her son was autistic and the only advice they gave her was that now she would be able to break the "only 1 child law" and have another. Not discouraged she researched and researched and discovered her son could learn and have a better life. Thus she started a school for her son and 10 other autistic children...
I just thought I would share!

My nephew is autisitic and has been very hard throughout out his life. However about 6 months ago, my brother started giving my nephew papaya extract and it really called him down. He is SOOOOOOOO much better. More flexible and is more calm now. I just cannot believe it.
On the other hand, I have a documentary that is probably about 30-50 minutes and tells about a man with Down Syndrome and how he lives his life. It is called "The Teachings of Jon." It is very good and very inspiring.
I also thought this class helped. I have always been interested in autistic and through out high school I was around a student everyday that was autistic, many of the teachers did not know how to help him and now with this class I know that I will not be a teacher like they were.
I also saw the lifetime movie and I loved it! It was great and it also had a great story line behind it.
That's really sad what they told that Chinese mother. There is definitely more that she can do and I'm so glad that didn't just turn to having another child-that she did something to help the one she already had.
I saw something on CNN saturday when I was at home and it was about this woman and her 19 year old son. They were from India and she had moved to the U.S. to accept a job as a chemist. She found out her son was autistic and she quit her job, and began working with him full time. Now, she has developed a new method of teaching children with autism. Her son can not speak, but he writes and uses a keyboard and those around him can read what he wants to say. She works with children in a strict manner. She said that you have to speak to them like they are normal. Talking slowy and being TOO patient is not her method. But she seems to have an effect on every child she has worked with. I found that to be very interesting!
... I believe the class on Autism has helped me with SED 260 but my Child Psychopathology class as well. Right now- we are discussing autism and childhood onset schizophrenia.
Tuesday we watched at documentary about ABA therapy and the studies that were conducted at UCLA. I think it's REALLY interesting to follow these children throughout their lifespan to see how they advanced with the help of the therapy... some of the children in the study were completely indistinguishable from 'normal' children.
If anyone is intrested in learning more about Child Psycholopathology and the different types- PSY 408 is a great class to take! It's very informative! :)
