Family Emergency
I have not quit the Monday night class, last week I attended the Wed. class. My mother went for what was supposed to be a small routine surgery last Friday evening for a bowel obstruction, but it turned out to be much more than that. I was scheduled for military training and was already at the training site taht night, when my sister called to tell me I had to get to Somerset as fast as possible because the nurses had came out to tell them my mother was not going to live through the surgery. She did pull through, but she is in intensive care at Somerset Hospitle. There is no certainty that is going to make it just yet, but things are slowly looking better. I am taking turns with my father staying by her side all through the nights. I am going to do my best to be in class tommorrow night, but I am still curious as to what we went over?

I hope she gets better!
We went over emotional/behavioral disorders and learning disabilities. We also talked for a while about the test...it's going to be open until the 19th so you can take it before, during, or after SB. There's no time limit on this test and you can open it as many times as you want. The article assignment that we got is also due online that same day. We also went over the observation that we have to do but pretty much all of that is online (the rubric, questions, etc.)
As far as EBD goes we did a partner activity reading an article about EBDs. We talked about how difficult it is to diagnose someone with EBDs and what some on the categories of EBDs were. We talked about how to help all children be involved in the classroom, even the ones who maybe have more internalized emotions and who appear to be more shy.
When we talked about learning disabilities we talked about what they were, dyslexia and such, and things that could be done to help them learn (books on tape, scribes, etc.) The biggest thing I remember is that communication is a big problem for students with learning disabilities.
I know that's not everything, but hope it helps a little!
Preston, I will be praying for you and your family especially your mom. I know what you are going through. Someone in my life recently died last week and it is making me feel depressed. I feel empty.
Preston, I will defiantly be praying for you as well and Like Renee said we just covered the Emotional and Behavioral disorders and learning disabilities. The test is open for you to access multiple times and is not due until after spring break on that Wednesday. There is also a powerpoint online in the new section for the class, that covered what the class was about. Hope all gets better with your mom and I will keep her in my prayers.
Preston, I'm sorry to hear about all of the difficulty you are experiencing. Having a husband with terminal cancer I that when a loved one is in the hospital it takes an emotional as well as a physical toll on you. Please let me know how I can best support you through this time relative to your class work.
I want to add and clarify what Renee said. Communication IS key for children with each of these unique learning challenges. However, for children with learning disabilities what is MOST significant is that we teach them HOW to learn. We must provide them SPECIFIC strategies to use to address their unique learning disabilities. They certainly have to be able to communicate those learning needs to teachers as well.
Renee is correct also in that communication is the most significant key for success for children with emotional and behavioral disorders. We must teach them how to become effective communicators and how to deal with the specific issues relative to their area of challenge as well.
I would encourage you to go to the the 21455 site of Blackboard and go over the weekly resources for Week 7 to give you the overview for the week.
Preston, I will keep you and you're in my prayers.
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
-Psalm 46:1-3
Danielle, This is one of my favorite verses. I had printed it out and taped next to my keyboard for months. Due to the (what the doctors have said) terminal cancer my husband has many days and weeks have felt overwhelming. This scripture is a constant reminder that regardless of what happens here on earth I can always turn to my loving, caring Heavenly Father who is my refuge and gives me the exact amount of strength I need to face whatever comes my way.
I appreciate you sharing that with Preston. It's an encouragement for all of us!
